Prasto: A Modern Handwritten Font for Crafters & Sellers

If you’ve ever spent 20 minutes scrolling through font sites looking for that *just-right* handwritten typeface—one that feels fresh but not fussy, friendly but still polished—you’ll understand why Prasto landed on my desktop and stayed there. Designed by Ian Mikraz, Prasto is a monoline script font with genuine personality: relaxed curves, consistent stroke weight, and subtle rhythm that makes it feel hand-drawn—not traced, not over-digitized, but authentically human.

What sets Prasto apart for crafters isn’t just its charm—it’s its quiet versatility. As a script font, it shines in display use: names on wedding welcome boards, boutique tags, candle jar labels, or chalkboard-style signs for farmers’ markets. But unlike many expressive scripts, Prasto stays legible even at smaller sizes—think 14–16pt on product stickers, 18pt on kraft paper gift tags, or 24pt on printable planner headers. Its clean baseline and open letterforms help cutting machines like Cricut and Silhouette read edges accurately, especially when using the Clean variation. That means fewer mis-cuts on vinyl decals or iron-on transfers for tote bags and tees.

The Rough variation adds gentle texture—like ink slightly bleeding on uncoated stock—without sacrificing clarity. I use it for seasonal packaging (think holiday cookie boxes or spring botanical labels), where that tactile, handmade warmth boosts perceived value. Customers notice it: “Handmade” isn’t just a claim on your Etsy listing—it’s visible in the font choice. Prasto doesn’t scream “vintage” or “boho” or “minimalist.” It simply feels *intentional*, which strengthens brand consistency across your physical products and digital assets.

Here’s where Prasto works best in real projects:

Readability matters most where your customers interact directly with your product. On small items—like tea bag tags or mini favor labels—avoid tight kerning or overlapping swashes. Prasto includes no ligatures or decorative alternates, which keeps it predictable and production-friendly. That’s intentional: it’s built for doing work, not just looking pretty in a mockup. You won’t need to manually adjust spacing before sending to your label printer—or waste vinyl testing swash-heavy variants that don’t cut cleanly.

Font pairing is where Prasto truly earns its keep. As a modern handwritten font, it pairs naturally with neutral, highly legible typefaces. Try Clean Prasto over a light-weight sans serif (e.g., Poppins Light) for minimalist packaging, or layer Rough Prasto above a warm serif (like Cormorant Garamond) for elegant invitation suites. Avoid pairing it with other scripts or overly decorative fonts—the goal is balance, not competition. Your customer should notice the message first, then appreciate the thoughtful typography second.

File-wise, Prasto comes as OTF and TTF—both fully compatible with Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio, and Affinity apps. No web fonts or variable weights are included, which keeps things simple for craft-focused use. It supports basic Latin multilingual characters (including accented letters used in French, Spanish, and German), so if you sell bilingual baby shower invites or EU-targeted product labels, you’re covered. Just double-check diacritics in your final layout before printing.

Licensing is non-negotiable—and refreshingly straightforward. Prasto is a commercial font, meaning you can use it to design and sell physical products (stickers, mugs, apparel), digital downloads (SVG files, Canva templates, printable bundles), client work (logo design, shop branding), and even merchandise (tote bags, enamel pins). No per-unit fees, no hidden restrictions—just one license covering all your small business needs. That peace of mind matters when you’re scaling from craft fairs to wholesale accounts.

One practical note: Prasto isn’t meant for long paragraphs. It’s a display font, not body text. Keep it for headlines, names, short phrases, and decorative accents. For multi-page printable workbooks or instruction sheets, pair it with a trusted sans serif or serif for the supporting text. This isn’t a limitation—it’s smart typography. Your customers trust clarity, and Prasto delivers exactly that when used with intention.

I’ve used Prasto on everything from lavender-scented soy candle jars sold at local boutiques to digital wedding suite templates downloaded in 17 countries. In every case, it performed: readable on screen and in print, cut cleanly on vinyl, scaled well across formats, and consistently evoked the warmth and care my customers associate with handmade goods. It doesn’t try to be everything—just the right thing, at the right time.

If your current script font feels either too stiff or too chaotic, Prasto is worth trying. Not as another download to collect—but as a reliable, expressive tool you reach for again and again when your product needs to say “this was made thoughtfully, just for you.” That’s the quiet power of great typography in the hands of makers.
